MST3K season 11
Described in one word? Forced.
Newly launched on Netflix streaming a year-and-a-half after a huge Kickstarter, MST3K’s triumphant return has me complaining about newfangled things.
To be fair, the new voices for Servo and Crow — Baron Vaughn and Hampton Yount, respectively — do a great job; slipping into the roles without much effort. If you haven’t seen MST3K in a while, you probably wouldn’t even have noticed the change.
Jonah Ray and Felicia Day, however, are trying waaaaaaaay too hard. They’re VERY excited to be a part of MST3K and you can hear it in every line. They miss snarky completely and land in hokey instead (which is the job of the B-movies being lampooned). It’s especially apparent when big-name guest stars come in, or the original actors cameo as established characters.
But it’s not just them. The series also overshot the cheap look and feel of the original. This is best demonstrated by pairing over-designed models with a distractingly choppy framerate for the new door sequence in an attempt to emulate stop-motion animation… even though the original show never used stop motion.
The revival often feels like a bunch of hipsters jumped on MST3K the second it was old enough to be retro and remade it in their own image. The show would work a little better if it stopped trying to look cheap and simply WAS cheap. And some of the new actors just need to let the joke come to them, to reappropriate a sports phrase.
Still, it’s just a show; I should really just relax.

Red, White and Dew S. A.
I’d like to open this by saying this Franken-dew was not anywhere near as abhorrent as Carrot Cake Hershey Kisses, which are quickly becoming the Sucker Punch of the food I tried just to write about it here.
For the uninitiated, Red, White and Dew is a “new” flavor of Mountain Dew made by combining its Code Red, White Out and Voltage varieties. And if the flavor is any indication, the mixture is much heavier on the Voltage and the White Out than the Code Red.
While the combined flavor really isn’t all that special (or great), it’s still a clever idea that more-or-less markets itself. With packaging this patriotic, it’s clear target is Independence Day. Which, I’m sure, is why they rushed it out for April.
… It’d be a little embarrassing if the supply doesn’t last.
